USCIRF has been accused of hypocrisy toward the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The only way for the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to prove the necessity of its existence is to fulfill its obligations and protect the rights of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in accordance with the declared principles. This is stated in a letter sent by the Representative Office of the Ukrainian people to the organization in Washington.

"Right now, before the eyes of the whole world, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which has a history of more than a thousand years, is being cruelly and cynically destroyed. The political regime in Kiev is not shy of methods, taking away churches and the largest monasteries from believers, beating clergy and believers, imprisoning those who try to protest, and banning the very existence of the Church. However, we have not yet heard a single statement on this matter from the Commission, whose purpose is to monitor the observance of the universal right to freedom of religion and belief abroad, using international norms for this purpose," the document says.

As the Mission notes, the USCIRF is witnessing in Ukraine gross violations that do not comply with any international standards and numerous violent hate crimes. Moreover, U.S. political representatives are directly participating in the culture war in Ukraine, helping to spread hatred and violence, including on religious grounds. "This allows us to conclude about your hypocrisy, double standard policy and the uselessness of the Commission's existence," notes the Secretary of the Representative Office Dmytry Vasilets.

As known, USCIRF pays close attention to the violation of religious freedoms in Russia and Belarus and has even included Russia on its "special attention" list since 2009.  Based on its monitoring, it makes "strong recommendations" to the President, the Secretary of State and the U.S. Congress to tighten policy toward certain countries.
